Kicks and Route 66 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dCYApJtsyd0

Route 66 in Albuquerque is filled with lots of memories and artifacts from the days before interstate highways. Central Avenue leaves I 40 for a bit and takes one through a lovely old part of the city; a street lined with restaurants, movie houses, shops, and other places oozing with memories. I had a late dinner last night with old pal Rick Mobbs. Rick and I go back as far as 1982 (or there abouts). We first cast eyes on each other on the platform of Fields Corner subway station in Dorchester, Massachusetts. Later we both worked at a half-way house in East Boston. Rick is now doing scenery construction and painting on Hollywood sets here in Albuquerque and other locales across the country.

I met Rick for dinner at the Route 66 Diner on Central in the Nob Hill section of Albuquerque. We really enjoy seeing each other. Lots of gray and wrinkles later we are still amazed by life and its uncertainties. Rick’s wife Naomi gave birth to a baby girl last year. Naomi was near term the last time I saw her during my visit here last year. They live in Montezuma, up I 40 near Las Vegas, New Mexico. Rick is very happy with his family and it shows. I am happy with him.

I’ve been in Albuquerque for 5 days. I like this town very much. The food is so eclectic. One can find whatever one likes (most of the time). I doubt there is any good cajun food here. I may be wrong. I’ve spent a lot of time with Ben Adams and Kathy Griego. I’ve spent time in deep discussion with both and they are gentle and sweet people.

I have spent time by myself at some of my favorite places; the libraries! I have a new library card which I treasure. The Albuquerque library card is really cool. The art work on various cards I’ve collected across the country is amazing. I’ve been to the main library down town, to the Ernie Pyle library, and to the Special Collections Library on Central Ave.

I’m catching up on rest, sleep, and eating well. I’ve got this room at Kirtland Air Force Base.

I think my clothes are dry so I’m closing this one out for now. Karen Fellner is in town today. I want to see her again.

Peace out,

g
