The Best Things in Life are Free (well, not quite)

Where I choose to sit for most of the day has a nice view of the land that surrounds The Castle. From this seat and through that glass door I can see the Universe. I can see forward and backward for Centuries and I can see some of the simplest most pleasurable objects and events. Only I can appreciate what I see but there are times when I will interrupt your most busy day to notify you about them.

Today I saw this flash of yellow streak by and perch on the old gate that opens to the secret garden. It was a goldfinch and it has been living nearby for the summer. It pauses on the gate or on one of the long canes of the ‘Henry Kelsey’ rose that predominates. It brings pleasure to my life to see it. I wrote a brief description just a moment ago that fits the bird, me, and the rose bush nicely. Here it is.

I DO SOMETHING GOOD

I own a large, glass mixing bowl. It is filled with small stones from many beaches. I have it lying out on the patch of dirt where I am raising struggling rose bushes. I keep it filled with fresh water. It’s been two years that I have been doing this. This year is the first time a bird has come to drink from the bowl and it does so regularly. The bird is a beautiful goldfinch. Believe me when I tell you that this gives me great pleasure. More than you get from reading about it I’m sure.

  1. We have tons of goldfinches constantly coming and going our feeders. I really love them. I especially enjoy watching them in springtime as they gradually change from dark green to bright yellow. What a gift! ~ Robert
