Ocean Point, Maine

Ocean Point 006

HOW THE EARTH WORKS

The water tries to push past the ledge,
Shoulders block its path,
Drenching power from across the ocean,
Felt deep within,
Rising and falling from
So far away,
Way, way beyond the horizon.

Massive forms rise and resist
With weighty presence of stone,
Ledge stuck to the geological foot of
Ages old plates tipped up,
Water, water everywhere,
No way to move
Over the giants.

The water can only be maddened,
Troubled, frustrated and foiled,
The ledge holds its place,
The water relents and moves,
Makes holes in the ocean
To pretend it is the boss,
But not convincingly.

  1. Beautifully written, George. Food for thought.

    And here is another perspective from the Tao Te Ching:

    Under heaven nothing is more soft and yielding than water.
    Yet for attacking the solid and strong, nothing is better;
    It has no equal.
    The weak can overcome the strong;
    The supple can overcome the stiff.

  2. Amazing photo that captures the beauty, power and vastness of the ocean against sky. The poem takes my heart to the power of this body. The two pieces together make me want to be in that photo. Thanks for drink.

  3. Hi, Nina. I changed the last two lines of the second stanza by removing the comma to “No way to move Over the Giants.”
    Thanks for showing up. Always good to see you.
